 Biography
Douglas Glover is the author of four story collections (including
16 Categories of Desire), four novels (including The
Life and Times of Captain N.) and a book of essays, Notes
Home from a Prodigal Son. His fiction has been translated
into French, Spanish, Russian and Japanese, and his stories have
been frequently anthologized. He has edited the annual Best
Canadian Stories and its predecessor, Coming Attractions,
since 1991. He was a 1991 GG fiction finalist for A Guide to
Animal Behaviour. From southwestern Ontario, Glover studied
at York University, the University of Edinburgh and the Iowa Writers'
Workshop. A former journalist, he now teaches creative writing
at Vermont College in Montpelier, Vermont. He lives in Wilton,
N.Y.

"Socrates curled in the coyote hole" - Lilburn has
dug down to a speech which is like "unbearable nudity."
Everything comes together here: immensity of canvas, ambition

Biography
Tim Lilburn was born in Regina. He has published five previous
poetry collections, including To the River (1999), winner
of the Saskatchewan Book Award for Book of the Year, Moosewood
Sandhills (1994), winner of the Canadian Authors Association
Award for Poetry, and Tourist To Ecstasy (1989), a finalist
for the Governor General's Award in poetry. His poems have been
widely anthologized. Lilburn teaches philosophy and literature
at St. Peter's College in Muenster, Saskatchewan.

This heart-rending tragedy describes the rise and fall of Nobel
laureate Fritz Haber, who sacrifices everything for his science,
only to have his research used to murder millions. Well-crafted,
intelligent, thought-provoking, accessible and relevant, this
play resonates far beyond the final page.
Biography
Vern Thiessen is a playwright, actor, screenwriter, director
and theatre educator. He is a graduate of the MFA playwriting
program at the University of Alberta and was drama coordinator
at Lakeland College in Lloydminster, Alberta (1993-96). His plays
include The Courier (1988); Apple (2000, winner
of the Alberta Play Competition); Blowfish (1996); Dawn
Quixote (1995); Cressida (1994); I Fell in Love
with an Eel (1991); and The Resurrection of John Frum
(1990). Thiessen teaches at the University of Alberta and is artistic
associate for play development at the Citadel Theatre. He lives
in Edmonton.

Biography
Margaret MacMillan is provost of Trinity College and professor
of history at the University of Toronto. Published as Peacemakers
in the U.K., Paris 1919 was chosen by Churchill biographer
and former British politician Roy Jenkins as his favourite book
of the year ("written with pace and flavored with impudence").
It has won the Samuel Johnson Prize, the Canadian Booksellers
Association nonfiction book of the year award and the Duff Cooper
Prize, and was a New York Times best book in 2002. MacMillan's
previous books include Women of the Raj and Canada and
NATO. She is the great-granddaughter of David Lloyd George,
portrayed along with Woodrow Wilson and Georges Clémenceau
in Paris 1919.

In this extremely fine novel of self-discovery and empowerment,
Glen Huser allows his characters, along with the reader, to uncover
difficult truths. Two resilient outcasts struggle to survive being
different in a small town. With subtle yet confident strokes and
an off-beat sense of humour, Huser's story makes it impossible
not to care.
Biography
Glen Huser teaches library and information studies at the University
of Alberta. He is a former librarian and the founder of Magpie,
a quarterly magazine that showcases student writing and graphics.
His adult novel, Grace Lake, was a finalist for the W.H.
Smith / Books in Canada First Novel Award as well as the Writers'
Guild of Alberta Novel of the Year Award. His first novel for
children, Touch of the Clown (1999), was shortlisted for
the Mr. Christie's Book Award. Huser reviews children's books
for the Edmonton Journal. He lives in Edmonton.

Biography
Allen Sapp is a painter who grew up on the Red Pheasant Reserve
in Saskatchewan in the 1930s; he is a descendant of the legendary
Cree leader Poundmaker. He is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy
of Arts (1985) and an Officer of the Order of Canada (1987). Sapp's
work has been exhibited across Canada, in the U.S. and in Europe.
It can be found in the collections of the Glenbow Museum (Calgary),
the McMichael Collection (Kleinburg, Ont.), the Mendel Art Gallery
(Saskatoon) and the Canadian Museum of Civilization (Gatineau).
Sapp has produced two books (A Cree Life: The Art of Allen
Sapp and I Heard the Drums). He lives in North Battleford,
Saskatchewan.

Biography
Jane Brierley is a literary translator, writer, teacher and editor.
This is her second Governor General's Literary Award for English
translation. She won in 1990 for Yellow-Wolf & Other Tales
of the Saint Lawrence (by Philippe-Joseph Aubert de Gaspé,
originally published in 1893). She was a finalist on three other
occasions: 1988, 1993 and 1997. Her most recent translation is
Huron-Wendat: The Heritage of the Circle by Aboriginal
scholar Georges E. Sioui. Previous translations include The
Return of the Bluebird (by André Dion) and Quebec
and Its Historians (by Serge Gagnon). Brierley lives in Montreal.
