Biography
Translator, short-story writer and novelist, Paule Noyart was born in Belgium, where she studied fine arts and drama before settling in Quebec. She has been a figure in the Quebec literary community for just over 30 years. Her novels include La danse d'Issam and Compote et Gruau (winner of the Prix Alfred-Desrochers) and, most recently, Les pékinois de monsieur Chang. An accomplished literary translator, she was a GG finalist in 1998 for her translation of a Leonard Cohen biography, and was awarded a GG in 2002 for Histoire universelle de la chasteté et du célibat. This year she wins her second GG. Paule Noyart lives in Bromont, Quebec.

Jury's comment
Paule Noyart shows a keen sensitivity to the poetry of the original. In a true act of literary creation, the expressive liberties the translator has taken serve this culturally-rich novel well. The remarkable quality of her work manages to transcend the limits of the translator's art - a rare accomplishment indeed.
