The Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts, Canada's
foremost distinctions for excellence in the visual and media arts,
were created in 1999 by the Governor General of Canada and the
Canada Council for the Arts, which funds and administers the awards.
Six $15,000 prizes are awarded annually to visual and media artists
for distinguished career achievement in fine arts (painting, drawing,
photography, print-making and sculpture, including installation
and other three-dimensional work), applied arts (architecture
and fine crafts), independent film and video, or audio and new
media. One $15,000 prize is awarded annually for outstanding contributions
to the visual and/or media arts in a volunteer or professional
capacity.
This year's winners will also be presented with an original mixed
media work by visual artist Jamelie Hassan, laureate of a Governor
General's Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2001.
Nominees must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of
Canada. They must be nominated by specialists in the visual or
media arts. A peer assessment committee, comprising senior visual
and media arts professionals chosen by the Canada Council (Cameron
Bailey, Murray Favro, Yvan Gauthier, Karen Love, Mathew Nuqingaq,
Carol A. Phillips and Serge Tousignant) selected the 2002 laureates.
Each year, the Canada Council for the Arts awards prizes and
fellowships to more than 100 Canadian artists and scholars for
excellence in the arts, humanities and sciences.
