Canada Council “thrilled” by funding announcement

Ottawa, November 23, 2005 - The Canada Council for the Arts has welcomed the announcement by Canadian Heritage Minister Liza Frulla of a $306.5 million increase in the Canada Council budget over the next three years.

“This is thrilling news, not just for the Canada Council and the arts community, but for all Canadians,” said Canada Council Chair Karen Kain. “It is a clear indication that the government recognizes the enormous contribution the arts make to the quality of life of Canadians and the communities they live in.”

Ms. Kain said the additional funding would be used to increase the Council’s investment in artists and arts organizations in all artistic disciplines and in all regions of the country.

“It will provide the resources our artists and arts organizations desperately need to create, produce, present and tour outstanding work, and share that work with audiences at home and abroad,” Ms. Kain said.

“The federal government made a bold investment in the talent and excellence of Canadian artists when it created the Canada Council in 1957,” Ms. Kain said. “We are delighted that the government has made an equally visionary decision today to set the stage for artistic excellence in the 21st century.”

The announcement comes as the Canada Council prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2007.
