Jean-Louis Roux, Chairman of the Canada Council for the Arts to visit New Brunswick July 10-14

Ottawa, 4 July 2001 - Jean-Louis Roux, Chairman of the Canada Council for the Arts, will be visiting Moncton, Dalhousie, Shediac, Bouctouche and Caraquet later this month to meet with artists, arts organizations and the media and to participate in a variety of cultural events. He will be joined by Jeannita Thériault of Moncton, a member of the Council's Board since August 2000.

Mr. Roux will arrive in Moncton on Tuesday, July 10 to co-host a reception for the city's arts community with Mayor Brian Murphy at Moncton City Hall. At the 5-7 p.m. reception, which is expected to attract artists and arts organizations from Moncton and the surrounding area, Mr. Roux will speak about the Canada Council's work and the value of public arts funding.

Other activities during Mr. Roux's visit include a visit to the Aberdeen Cultural Centre and the Clément Cormier Museum in Moncton, attendance at an opening performance at the Théâtre de l'Escaouette in Shediac, the opening of the Festival de Musique de la Baie des Chaleurs in Dalhousie, a visit to the Centre des arts visuels in Caraquet and a performance at the Pays de La Sagouine dinner theatre in Bouctouche.

Media representatives are invited to meet Mr. Roux at an on-the-record lunch briefing at l'Auberge in the Delta Beauséjour, 750 Main Street in Moncton, on Wednesday, July 11 from 12:30 - 2 p.m. He will also be available for interviews at other times during his visit. The Canada Council for the Arts is a national arm's length agency which supports and promotes the work of Canadian artists and arts organizations. In 2000-2001, the Council awarded nearly $1.8 million in grants to artists and arts organizations in New Brunswick.

In addition to his role as Chairman of the Canada Council, a position he has held since 1998, Mr. Roux is an accomplished actor, director and writer. He was a co-founder of the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde in Montreal and served as Director of the National Theatre School of Canada between 1982 and 1987.
