Opera/Music Theatre Program: Project Funding
Deadline
1 December
Program Description
The Opera/ Music Theatre Program has two components: Project Funding and Multi-Year and Annual Funding. The Project Funding component provides a contribution to specific programs, events or special initiatives proposed by professional Canadian opera/music theatre companies, particularly in the areas of Canadian creation, development of young audiences and outreach/dissemination.
A project is defined as a specific event or activity taking place in a defined and concentrated period, with a clearly delineated budget. Canada Council's project funding contributions are directed towards specific artistic, production and promotional costs and may not be used to support the applicant's organizational structure and overall activities. Seasons of activities are not eligible.
The Multi-Year and Annual Funding component of this program is available to professional Canadian opera/ music theatre companies. Note that the Multi-Year and Annual Funding component has its own guidelines and application form, which are available on the Canada Council’s website.
Program Objectives
- To recognize and support artistic excellence and achievement in opera/music theatre.
- To advance the creation and development of new Canadian works, while continuing to advocate for the vitality of the international operatic form.
- To encourage innovative education and outreach programs that attract and serve new audiences for opera/music theatre, including young audiences.
- To support the training and development of Canadian opera/music theatre artists, and of administrators, from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- To encourage the use of best management practices within the opera/music theatre field.
- To foster mutual understanding, co-operation and collaboration among creators, performers, producers and audiences of traditional and non-traditional operatic theatre, other disciplines and still-evolving forms

Eligibility
Professional, non-profit, incorporated Canadian opera/music theatre companies, music organizations, theatre companies, artists’ collectives and other production companies are eligible to apply for support.
Companies that receive multi-year support may also apply in mid-cycle for project funding, on a limited basis however, to enable them to benefit from special initiatives or programming opportunities that were not foreseen when their long-range operating plans were formulated, if such initiatives or opportunities cannot be covered by general operating revenues.
The Opera/Music Theatre Program does not support projects involving market-driven forms of music and (or) music for which an established commercial support structure exists (such as musicals or rock operas).
For this program, music theatre is defined as an art form that involves important scenic components, including a predominant use of the singing voice along with other means of dramatic expression.
Some projects may belong more to theatre than to music theatre. Some projects may also be better served by the New Music Program. In case of doubt, applicants must consult the Theatre or Music Sections to determine which peer assessment committee may better assess their request.
This Canada Council program is accessible to Aboriginal arts organizations and arts organizations from diverse cultural and regional communities of Canada.

Grant Amount
The Opera/Music Theatre Program awards grants using a competitive process. A peer assessment committee will recommend funding priorities and establish the value of the Canada Council for the Art’s contribution to the proposed activities of successful applicants. Recommendations are based on the program’s assessment criteria and available funds.
Project funding is available annually and each request is subject to peer assessment. It is not guaranteed, ongoing yearly support.
Retroactive funding is not available
