Program Description

Assistance to Media Arts Production Organizations offers operating assistance to Canadian non-profit media arts organizations.

The Canada Council for the Arts defines the media arts as works in film, video, audio and new media.

This program is intended to assist Canadian organizations that have a mandate to support the practice of media arts, with particular emphasis on the quality of the activities developed by organizations:

  • to support the research, creation, development and/or production of independent media artworks by Canadian artists
  • to support the artistic and professional development of Canadian media artists, and
  • to develop other services, facilities or activities that advance independent media arts practice by Canadian artists.

The Canada Council defines independent productions as those over which directors/artists maintain complete creative and editorial control, as well as a significant percentage of the copyright.

This program has two levels of assistance:

Level 1 – Annual operating assistance (1 October 2009)

Level 2 – Multi-year operating assistance (on a three-year cycle)

All Canada Council programs are accessible to Aboriginal artists or arts organizations and artists or arts organizations from diverse cultural and regional communities of Canada.

Strategic Priorities

In keeping with the strategic priorities identified by the Canada Council for the Arts, this program strongly encourages organizations to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to fostering and developing the artistic practice of Aboriginal artists and culturally diverse artists.
