Annual Assistance to Cinematheques
UNDER REVIEW
Deadline
1 November 2009
Program Description
The Canada Council for the Arts regards cinematheques as key institutions for linking Canadian independent media artworks to the Canadian public and locating these works within a critical and historical context.
The Canada Council’s program of Annual Assistance to Cinematheques supports the work undertaken by these institutions to advance the development, understanding and appreciation of Canadian independent media artworks. Grant support is specifically directed to the activities carried out by the cinematheques that relate to independent work by Canadian media artists.
For the purposes of this program, the Canada Council defines media arts as works in film, video, audio and new media. Independent productions are those over which the director/artist maintains complete creative and editorial control. Note that the Canada Council gives priority to work that is innovative in the themes and subjects it addresses, the point of view it expresses and the aesthetic strategies it employs.
Eligibility
The Canada Council for the Arts recognizes cinematheques as institutions whose principal activities are to present, collect, document and interpret media artworks and publish critical writings on such works.
To be eligible for annual funding, cinematheques must have been in operation for at least three years, have a professional staff and an established administrative structure, and be legally constituted as a Canadian, non-profit organization.
Applicants must demonstrate a serious, ongoing commitment to advancing the development, understanding and appreciation of Canadian independent media artworks. Specifically, applicants must:
- collect Canadian independent film, video, audio and/or new media artworks for archival (excluding distribution) purposes
- present Canadian independent media artworks to the public through an annual, ongoing program of presentation, and
- operate a publicly accessible reference library housing materials that document and interpret Canadian independent media artworks. (These materials may include books, periodicals, reference files on artists or titles, scripts, posters and photographic stills.)
Applicants must demonstrate sound financial management through their financial reports and budget forecasts. Applicants must pay artists’ and/or distributor rental fees for the Canadian, independent media artworks presented. At the time of application, organizations are required to submit a list including the name of the artist and/or distributor, the date and the amount of payment for each Canadian, independent media artwork presented over the previous two years. We also reserve the right to demand cancelled cheques or other proof of the payment of artists’ and/or distributor rental fees.
Cinematheques that receive operating or annual assistance through any other Canada Council program may not apply to this program for any activities already covered.
Organizations may not apply to this program for presentation, collection/acquisition, interpretation, documentation, research and publishing activities related to a distribution collection.
This Canada Council for the Arts program is accessible to Aboriginal arts organizations and arts organizations of diverse cultural and regional communities of Canada.
Grant Amount
There are no minimum or maximum grants that may be requested or received. Applicants may receive less than the full amount requested.
The annual grant level approved by the Canada Council is normally maintained for three years.
