Program Description

The Grants to Media Arts Organizations program offers grants to Canadian organizations that demonstrate a sustained commitment to research and development and the creation, presentation, dissemination, distribution or acquisition of independent Canadian media artworks. The purpose of this program is to strengthen organizations throughout Canada to ensure the conditions necessary for the vitality and advancement of independent media arts in Canada.

This program is accessible to Aboriginal arts organizations and arts organizations of diverse cultural and regional communities of Canada.

The Grants to Media Arts Organizations has three components:

  1. Multi-Year Operating
  2. Initiatives
  3. Emergency Fund

The grant of the Multi-Year component is offered on a multi-year basis for three consecutive years to support organizations in carrying out their planned activities. It may include an amount for the acquisition of equipment.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following General eligibility criteria and at least one of the Groups of eligibility criteria outlined in the guidelines to apply.

General eligibility criteria

  • be incorporated as a non-profit organization or constituted as a non-profit cooperative under federal or provincial legislation for non-profit companies and to have been active for at least two full years;
  • have a board of directors, the majority of whose members are artists or professionals working in the field of Canadian independent media arts. For festivals and cinematheques, it may be an advisory committee made up of artists or professionals;
  • support the practice of Canadian independent media arts;
  • demonstrate a sustained commitment to research and development and the creation, presentation, dissemination, distribution or collection of Canadian independent media artworks
  • have an administrative structure and a management system suited to the nature of its activities;
  • demonstrate sound financial management;
  • pay artists’ fees, distribution or dissemination rights to artists or pay fees to distributors for independent Canadian media artworks presented or acquired. Note that the minimum scales to use are those recommended by the IMAA (www.imaa.ca) or CARFAC (www.carfac.ca), and
  • meet one of the two criteria below:

have obtained a grant from one of the following programs in 2009 or 2010:

  • Assistance to Media Arts Production Organizations: Annual Funding or Multi-Year Funding
  • Assistance to Media Arts Distribution Organizations
  • Grants for Media Arts Dissemination: Annual Assistance for Programming
  • Annual Assistance to Media Arts Festivals, and/or
  • Annual Assistance to Cinematheques

or

have obtained at least three grants from one of the following programs in the last five years (that is, in competitions between 1 November 2005 and 1 May 2010 inclusive):

  • Media Arts Dissemination Project Grants
  • Media Arts Commissioning
  • Organizational Development in Media Arts: Grants for New Initiatives, New Models and Emerging Organizations, and/or
  • Media Arts Project Grants: Development Project Grants

Grant Amount

Amount for Multi-Year Operating

The amounts requested for in each of the three years of the cycle must be identical, except in the case of organizations whose activities consist exclusively in organizing biennial festivals. The latter may apply for a separate amount for each year of the cycle and can apply for a maximum of $7,500 for the years between festivals.

Amount for equipment acquisition

Maximum amounts (including the amount requested for the purchase of equipment in partnership):

  • $40,000 for the first year
  • $20,000 for the second year, and
  • $20,000 for the third year.

Important Notice

Organizations applying to this program must submit financial and statistical information by using the CADAC Financial Form for Arts Organizations and the CADAC Statistical Form for Arts Organizations.                                        

CADAC Financial Form Requirements

Organizations are required to submit financial information to CADAC on the current year (2010-11), for the next three request years (2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14) and for the two previous years (2008-09 and 2009-10).

CADAC Statistical Form Requirements

Organizations are also required to submit statistical information for the current year (2010-11), for the next three request years (2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14), and for the two previous years (2008-09 and 2009-10).
