1 Why Tour Internationally?
|
Is it time to consider breaking out beyond the borders?
The following statements represent a few of the reasons artists have decided to tour internationally:
- We received an invitation for a festival.
- We’ve exhausted our touring potential in Canada.
- We want to expand our performance opportunities.
- We feel there is greater potential for our style of work in Europe.
- So many presenters are buying our kind of work in the U.S. that we think there’s opportunity for us too.
- We have artistic synergies with this company from Cuba and it seems to be leading to an international collaboration.
- We met a festival producer who was really excited about our artistic vision.
How do you get that first international engagement?
- Be patient. It’s going to take a lot of time.
- Try to have an objective perspective on your work and a clear understanding of how it stands up in the international marketplace.
- Get to know the various markets and what aesthetics and disciplines they prefer. Be able to express how your work offers something unique within that aesthetic.
- Understand that the logistics of touring internationally are much more complicated than touring within Canada.
