2.3 Types of Engagements
|
Presented performances
There are many types of presenters from festivals and government-run venues to independent presenters who may work with one or more venues. For specific information on presenters in specific regions, consult the section on the region in this guide.
Cultural engagements and exchanges
Indigenous artists have found opportunities to share their work and common values with other indigenous communities around the world. Artists who work within a specific cultural framework have found opportunities to bring their work to the country of their heritage or to other countries that also have large population bases of their heritage.
Residencies
International residencies are often aligned with an academic institution or venue. They are generally much more involved than the outreach (artist in the community) style of residency you may be used to. While they may include outreach and masterclasses, there is usually also a creation process of some kind.
Co-productions

With co-productions, a presenter or a group of presenters contribute to the creation process of a new work, offering cash and/or time in the theatre, followed by involvement in the initial presentations. These types of agreements usually include prominent public acknowledgement of the commission/ co-production partners for the life of the work.
Co-productions are usually developed by high-profile international festivals and producing houses. Occasionally, there are co-production programs for emerging artists, but they are usually offered to artists who have an established track record of international performance, excellence and innovation.
International collaborations
A number of companies have taken the international stage by working in collaboration with a company of the same discipline in another country. These generally involve creative collaboration on new work and/or learning established repertory from each other. They usually include performances in both countries.
Artist insight
"The most important natural reflex human have is most probably breathing. It is what keeps us alive. To me, art implies a similar action: to take in, to filter it, to give it back." – Marie Brassard Read more.
“With the reputation the company has acquired over the years, new export and co-production opportunities are arising for our works.” – Helen Basque, Le Théâtre du Gros Mécano Read more. |
