Benoît Lachambre founded the Compagnie par b.l.eux in 1996, with an ambitious, multi-faceted mission to produce Lachambre’s work in a spirit of openness and collaboration, to promote international artistic exchanges, to foster encounters among artists from diverse backgrounds and to develop interdisciplinary connections within dance. To date the company has generated seven works, in cooperation with national and international co-producers, and these have been widely performed in Quebec, Canada and abroad. True to his mission, Lachambre has developed collaborative relationships throughout the dance world. He has created works for Sarah Williams, Lisa Kovacs and the TanzWerkstatt in Berlin and the Tanzquartier in Vienna. He worked with set designer Thierry Bédard to produce Les Lions Mécaniques (1996) and with Laurent Godring to produce the video rrr … (2001) Lachambre continues to impact contemporary dance with his provocative works of unfettered imagination, attracting greater attention on the international stage. |

Artistic Director
From 1978 to 1990, Benoît Lachambre worked as a choreographer, dancer, improviser and teacher of both jazz and modern dance. He studied release work, composition and improvisation with Stephanie Skura and Nina Martin in New York. Through the 1990s he danced with Marie Chouinard in Montreal and Meg Stuart in Belgium, while presenting his own work regularly in Europe. Stylistically, Lachambre is the "apostle of destabilization," and is concerned with improvisation as a process, and pure form as a product.

NOT TO KNOW
October/2001/Montreal/Canada
150 minutes

Benoît Lachambre & Andrew de Lotbinière Harwood, Choreography
Not to Know (2001) – This revolutionary work
redefines the role of improvisation in dance. A team
of improvisers, four dancers and two musicians, join
fully in the creation of performances, and are joined
every evening of the installation by two different
guest improvisers, one a dancer, the other a musician.
As in much of Lachambre’s work, freedom of
interpretation operates within carefully established
structure. Bold imagery, use of symbolic costumes
and settings such as a room carpeted with grass,
provoke fresh readings of the artists’ improvisations.
The work was conceived in collaboration between
Benoît Lachambre’s Compagnie par b.l.eux and AH
HA productions, the company of Montreal dance
artist Andrew de Lotbinière Harwood.

on the possibilities for artistic encounter in the host city. The spectator is free to walk around the
presentation space, where the various distinct
modules have been installed. There, the public
