O Vertigo is synonymous with Ginette Laurin. In 1984, the award-winning choreographer founded the company as a forum for the creation and performance of her choreographic works. The energy, versatility and personal investment in creation of O Vertigo’s dancers has deepened the company’s reputation for superb quality. Laurin and her company set out to provoke discovery about the physical, aesthetic and evocative possibilities of dance, and see every new creation as a challenging voyage into unknown territory. Today, with a repertoire of over forty works, Laurin has defined an unmistakable movement signature that critics have identified as "dance with a soul." O Vertigo has performed in Canada, the United States, Europe, Brazil, Mexico, Egypt, Israel and Japan, and has taken part in many festivals, including the prestigious Next Wave Festival in New York and the Biennale internationale de la danse à Lyon in France. The company is presently working on Création 2004, which will première in Lille, France in April 2004.

Artistic Director

A passionate mover, after several years as a gymnast, Ginette Laurin studied modern and classical dance in Montreal and New York. In the early 1970s, she joined Montreal’s Groupe Nouvelle Aire; working with choreographers including Édouard Lock and Jean-Pierre Perreault, she became one of the city’s most sought-after interpreters. Today, she is known for thrillingly risky, evocative, fully-conceived works of dance, with sound and scenography integrated into the overall design of her work. Recently, she has shifted in the direction of more intimate works. A prolific creator, Ginette Laurin has received many awards and honours in recognition of the expressive power and originality of her choreography.

Luna (2001) – Continuing her shift towards intimate, lyrical choreography, Ginette Laurin has shaped a dreamlike lunar landscape from human bodies in flowing motion. Tiny details of movement are magnified through immense lenses to create a mood of opalescent clarity, and an unforgettable, close-up perspective on the hidden side of dance. Bodies flash like fiery comets through the universe of the dance, dance roundly in front of a dusk-red background; breathing flutters under billowing swirls of movement. Incorporating dramatic visual, lighting and sound design, Laurin’s Luna is a stunning work of dance, suspended in its own rarefied and wondrous air.

CRÉATION 2004
April/2004/Lille/France

Création (2004) – Since Luna (2001), Ginette Laurin has been exploring with a poetic resonance the similarities between the human body and other structures in the universe, be they infinitely large or infinitely small. In this new creation, she deals with the notion of “body-architecture”: the body as the container, outer shell for an essence that is different for each individual. She captures, through the use of the different physiognomies, that which we truly are, beyond outward appearance. She uses dance to capture the traces that human beings leave by moving their bodies through space and through time, and draws parallels between these sets of “prints” and other traces left in the universe. It is a continuation of Laurin’s artistic research, which remains open to new media and rewarding collaborations.
