Now in its 38th season, Alberta Ballet is comprised of 25 classically trained dancers, handpicked from around the globe for their exceptional talent. Under the dynamic leadership of artistic director Jean Grand-Maître, Alberta Ballet is receiving international acclaim for its powerful and dramatic performances. Alberta Ballet’s repertoire balances classical works with highly successful contemporary creations of narrative ballets that connects with modern esthetics and sensitivities - mixing proven, more accessible productions with works that take great risks and advance the art form. It includes ballets by noted choreographers such as George Balanchine, Christopher Wheeldon, Margie Gillis, Agnes de Mille, Rudi Van Dantzig, Helgi Tomasson and Jorma Elo. The company tours regularly across Canada and internationally to the United States, Europe, China and Africa. |

Choreographer
Canadian born Jean Grand-Maître is one of the most successful ballet choreographers of his generation. He assumed the artistic leadership of Alberta Ballet in 2002, after working internationally for 12 years. He has been commissioned by prestigious companies including Teatro alla Scala, Paris Opera Ballet, Bavarian State Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Ballet British Columbia and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. For Alberta Ballet, Jean has choreographed three highly successful and critically acclaimed full length works: Carmen (2002), Cinderella (2004) and Dangerous Liaisons (2004)

Carmen (2003) - Based on the novel by Prosper Mérimée and the most popular opera of all time, Carmen tells the story of the dominant temptress who pushes the men in her life to the limits of their savagery. Carmen finally meets her match with the lovesick Don José who calls her on her game: romance, seduction and uncontrollable passion all courtesy of Bizet’s mythical senorita. This tragic love story has become one of Alberta Ballet’s most praised productions.

Dangerous Liaisons (2004) - Through Dangerous Liaisons we enter into one of the most spectacularly destructive dramas that also became one of the most scandalous and controversial novels in European history. The full-length ballet is created on Choderlos de Laclos’ 18th century masterpiece of lust, seduction and revenge. Extreme eroticism and uncontrollable sexual desire are transformed into dangerous weapons of psychological warfare.
