Founded in 1985, the Sursaut dance company is devoted to the creation, production and dissemination of dance shows for young and family audiences. Le Bal sans fin (1993), Casse-Noisette et le Roi des Rats (1994), Les excentriques (1998)and Family Portrait (2001) are notable works in the repertoire of dance creations for youth. The company’s productions are presented from coast to coast in Canada as well as outside the country. Since 1987, Francine Châteauvert has assumed the roles of artistic director and choreographer. She collaborates closely with Adam Dymburt, dancer and general manager; together, they form the heart of the company.

Artistic Director

A self-taught artist, Francine Châteauvert made her first forays into the art of movement in artistic gymnastics before plunging into the world of dance. Her background also includes work in theatre and circus arts. Since 1987, Francine Châteauvert has been the company’s artistic director and choreographer. Her creations are imprinted with simplicity and freshness, offering performances imbued with a poetic realism in a highly physical choreographic style. The depth, beauty and happiness, great and small, that are found in the simplest things and in the seemingly innocuous moments of everyday life, are transmitted through her works. The concepts of simplicity and authenticity are at the heart of her artistic approach.

Family Portrait (2001) - Family Portrait presents the portrait of a family, apparently ordinary ; but behind appearances are dreams, imagination, desires, memories… Family Portrait is a dance-theatre production in which poetry and humour go hand in hand, where realism and fantasy overlap. Images of great beauty, spellbinding choreographies and unusual and engaging characters, make Family Portrait a magic show that amazes children and adults alike.
