Since 1972, BJM Danse has developed a unique contemporary repertoire. Founded by pioneering Quebec dance artists Geneviève Salbaing, Eva Von Gencsy and Eddy Toussaint to focus on jazz dance, this company has since evolved and improvised, in the spirit of jazz itself, in a series of new directions. Today, its dancers are exploring and elaborating new forms of dance by working with such exciting young artists as Crystal Pite, currently the company’s guest choreographer in residence. Based in Montreal, BJM Danse has earned a significant international reputation over the past three decades. The company spends the majority of time touring the world and since its inception has performed for more than two million people in eighty-five countries on five continents. |

Artistic Director
Louis Robitaille began to study classical ballet and jazz dance with BJM Danse, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal in 1973, going on to win international recognition as a performer with the Eddy Toussaint dance company and then as Principal Dancer for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal. In 1998, Louis Robitaille returned to BJM Danse and became the company’s artistic director. In this role, Robitaille has challenged the company to create, produce and perform works that fuse the rigour of classical dance, the fluidity of modern dance and the bold physicality of jazz and other contemporary expressions.

Crystal Pite, Choreographer
The Stolen Show [xspectacle] (2004) – The Stolen Show [xspectacle] is Resident Choreographer Crystal Pite’s newest work for BJM Danse created with composer Owen Belton during the Company’s 2002/03 season. Fascinated by the conundrum of art versus entertainment in the context of this well-loved company, Pite investigates both sides of the argument with her signature frankness and wit. Whether The Stolen Show [xspectacle] is presented as a question or a comment, a tribute or a parody, is left to the viewer to decide. Powered by [bjm_danse's] astonishingly versatile and courageous performers, Pite’s creation is an unflinching exploration of spectacle and expectation.

Rodrigo Pederneiras, Choreographer
Mapa - (2005) Rodrigo Pederneiras is the exclusive choreographer of the acclaimed Brazilian dance company Grupo Corpo. In this collaboration with BJM Danse, he uses the distinct vocabulary which has defined him as a renowned choreographer. Most of the music was composed by UAKTI and is excerpted from a disk entitled Mapa. The choreography reflects Pederneiras’s maturity and references his past artistic experiences with Marco Antonia Pena Araujo to create an hommage to the fruitful artistic collaboration he developed with him. The work is the result of his usual collaborators: Pedro Pederneiras (lighting design) and Fernando Veloso (decor/stage design).
