Kaeja d’Dance
Founded by Allen and Karen Kaeja in 1991, Kaeja d’Dance has made its mark on the dance world through performance, film and educational work. The company’s distinctive style is embued with densely packed, sharp-edged and sensual movement. The Kaejas, partners in dance and life, have created an eclectic array of original dances, both full-length ensemble pieces and a body of work called lifeDUETs (1999), a program of duets commissioned especially for them. The company’s style is both powerfully athletic and theatrical, deriving from a creative process that draws inspiration from Contact Dance and uses the dancers’ own experience as well as "structured innovations", a creative approach developed by the Kaejas, to shed light on the human condition. In 2002, the company toured Allen Kaeja’s Resistance (2000) in Canada and the United States. The Kaejas have also toured lifeDUETs (1999) to India, Spain, Portugal and Mexico, and to major cities in Canada.
