Kakaekwewin – Aboriginal Arts Advisory Committee
Current Members
The term for these committee members began April 2010-April 2011 with an extension to 2013 in order to work effectively with the Aboriginal Capacity Building - Multi-year program.
David General – Ohsweken, Ontario
- Sculptor, curator, multi-media visual artist with 25 years of experience
- Former acting senior Cultural Development Officer, Department of Indian and Northern Development
- Former chair of the Society of Canadian Artists of Native Ancestry
- Former Chief of Six Nations of the Grand River.
Meeka Kilabuk – Iqaluit, Nunavut
- Textile artist, designer, film maker, writer
- Leader, spokeperson, commissioner and co-drafter of legislation for Nunavut’s present Land Claims Agreement and Nunavut Act.
- Founding member of the Inuit National Organization and other significant organizations that benefit the Inuit including the Nunavut People with Disabilities Association in the Baffin
Doug Smarch – Teslin, Yukon
- Stone sculptor, multi-media artist, animator, textile artist, flute player
- Cultural/arts administrator for the Teslin Tlinget Heritage Center
- Recipient of the Best Emerging Artist award at the 2007 Canada Winter Games
Cathi Charles Wherry – Tsartlip Reserve, British Columbia
- Visual artist, curator, arts educator, writer
- Cultural broker for the First Peoples Language & Heritage Culture Council
- Arts administrator for 15 years, responsible for developing of arts funding programs, providing resources training, and advocacy at regional and national levels
Note: The name “Kakaekwewin” means to take council together in Algonkwin. It was given to the Canada Council for its use by Algonkwin Elder, William Commanda.
